Teofimo Lopez: Records (16 - 0, 12 KO's)
George Kambosos Jr: Records (19 - 0, 10 KO's)
Teofimo Lopez tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday. Now, the fight & the full card has been rescheduled to August 14. Lopez continues to show symptoms of the virus and tested positive after a PCR test. The fight, which was initially rescheduled from June 5 to June 19, will now take place in August.
Challenger George Kambosos Jr & unified lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez were all set to face each other in the ring this Saturday, June 19, in Miami, FL. Lopez was looking forward to fixing his place at the top of the division while facing his opponent George Kambosos Jr. The two boxers would have fought in the fight card’s main event.
The 23-year-old Lopez holds WBO, IBF, WBC, and WBA. On the other hand, the 27-year-old Kambosos remains undefeated, who recently won the fight against Lee Selby by split decision last October.
August 14 will mark the first defense of Teofimo Lopez Jr.’s title. Lopez will take on George Kambosos Jr. months after his fight against the Ukrainian professional boxer, Vasyl Lomachenko. The Australian pound-for-pound boxer will be the mandatory challenger for Lopez’s WBO and IBF title. Having defeated Lomachenko convincingly, the 23-year-old world champion looked in a state of immense confidence until this Monday & he still is. Let’s hope and pray for Lopez’s fast recovery so we can see him in action soon.
Talking about his health, Lopez said, “I already have asthma and since the coronavirus attacks our lungs, it might be a little riskier for me not to deal with it cautiously. Knowing that my lungs are weaker than a lot of people, I want to stay away from it.”
Undoubtedly, at this point, Lopez’s health is the priority for everyone. He’s already talked about his asthma, and it would be wise to focus on his health at the moment.
Teofimo Lopez, after a massive victory over Vasyl Lomachenko, looked all prepared to take up the first defense of his title. The match that was set to take place at Triller’s PPV in Miami on June 19 between the ‘Ferocious’ George Kambosos Jr. and ‘The Takeover’ Teofimo Lopez is now rescheduled to August 14.
Kambosos, on the other hand, is pretty confident with unwavering faith and desire to win. He already plans to emerge victorious in this fight against Lopez.. Talking about the game, Kambosos said, “I have watched Lopez’s game closely, and I can see a lot of loopholes; I already have plans to pinpoint those loopholes. While Lopez relies primarily on three or four tricks, but my team has created a great plan. We’ve plan B, C, D, E — and if plan A does not know the world, I’ll bring the next plan to the table. But obviously, we are hoping that he recovers soon and remains in good health. Let us pray he wins over the coronavirus.”
George Kambosos Jr. has reached the top of the lightweight division steadily; however, Lopez’s strength and in-ring abilities are evident from his game itself. Also, his tremendous defensive game is something that scares his opponents. In addition, Lopez has more balanced game skills that might create a problem for Kambosos. But it could be anyone’s game. While Kambosos will have an advantage of 1.5 inches in height, his opponent would have an advantage of half an inch reach.
George Kambosos Jr. has become one of the top names in the lightweight division. Kambosos, who sets the fight in his favor using the right cross and left hook, is often known for his aggressively greedy boxing style. His mastery in the marauding style of boxing often grabs all the eyeballs.
After testing positive for COVID-19, Lopez wishes to remain away from boxing so he can recover quickly. The world will witness the spectacle and see who comes out to be the next champion of the world. Until then, we hope for his speedy recovery!
